Becoming a Solar Installer
Anyone interested in offering solar energy sales, installation or professional services should obtain both training, and must obtain the necessary licenses to legally do work in Oregon. Typical licenses include:
Business license Starting A Business
Contractor licenses
Installer licenses
Becoming a Tax Credit-Certified Technician (TCCT)
PV:
To obtain Tax Credit Certified Technician (TCCT) Status for Photovoltaics:
- TCCT Application
- TCCT Training
- Certification (LRT or NABCEP EL)
- Oregon CCB License
Solar Thermal:
To obtain TCCT Status for Solar Thermal:
- TCCT Application
- TCCT Training
- Certification (STL or ODOE Exam)
- Oregon CCB License
Tax Credit Certified Technicians
To receive a residential tax credit for solar water heating and solar electric systems, ODOE requires that the systems be field verified by a “tax credit-certified technician”.
To receive a business energy tax credit, ODOE does not require commercial systems be field verified by a tax credit-certified technician. However, systems that receive a business energy tax credit will be randomly selected for inspection.

To maintain status a technician must do the following each year.
- Install/verify 2 systems*
- take 4 hours of technical training (continuing education)
- sign new annual agreement
- attend annual conference call update
*If you became certified after May 1st only 1 system in that year, if you became certified after September 1st, no systems are required in that year.
Energy Trust of Oregon Trade Ally
The Energy Trust of Oregon offers a set of rebates for the installation of solar electric and solar thermal systems for both residential and commercial customers through their Trade Ally program. Becoming an Energy Trust trade ally requires program training, a contractor's license and insurance.
